March 17, 2006—In biology, two heads are rarely better than one. But this unusual golden coin turtle, found in China, appears to be doing just fine. A businessman from the city of Qingdao says he bought the reptile at an animal market last year.
According to press reports released Wednesday, the turtle's two heads cooperate well and can even eat at the same time. Its owner says the reptile eats more than one-headed turtles do and has grown over the past year.
The creature most likely developed its unusual anatomy while still in the egg. Its embryo began to split in two—the process that gives rise to identical twins—but then failed to fully separate.
While uncommon, abnormalities caused by incompletely split embryos occur in many animal species, including fish, snakes, rats, cows—even humans, where the phenomenon leads to what are known as Siamese, or conjoined, twins.
Experts say survival rates for two-headed animals tend to be lower in the wild. But in captivity such animals can prosper. At the San Diego Zoo a two-headed corn snake named Thelma and Louise produced 15 normal offspring before it died.

Heart pioneer DeBakey gets top civilian honor
WASHINGTON – Congress approved the nation's top civilian honor Monday for Texas heart surgeon Michael DeBakey, the 99-year-old medical pioneer whose breakthroughs have saved millions of lives, including his own.
"If we did not have a Congressional Gold Medal, we would have to create one to honor the honorable Dr. Michael DeBakey," said Rep. Al Green, D-Houston, before the House voted unanimously to award the medal.
Dr. DeBakey has performed more than 60,000 surgeries and trained generations of doctors at Baylor College of Medicine. In 1964, he performed the first successful coronary bypass. At age 97, he became one of 10,000 or so patients and counting saved by surgery to repair a torn aorta – a condition that is almost always fatal but for the procedure he devised.
Mr. Green, Rep. Michael Burgess, R-Flower Mound, and another sponsor, Rep. John Culberson, R-Houston, spoke with Dr. DeBakey by phone after the House vote.
He expressed "deep appreciation," a Burgess aide said, and told them: "I have always been proud to be an American citizen." Dr. DeBakey's parents were born in Lebanon.
Dr. Burgess, one of a handful of physicians in Congress, noted that many lawmakers weren't yet born when Dr. DeBakey made his earliest advances in cardiac treatment.
"His contributions to medicine and his breakthrough surgery and innovative devices have completely transformed our view of the human body and of our longevity," Dr. Burgess said.
The Senate approved the DeBakey medal on March 27, and President Bush is expected to sign it into law. It will take months to design and strike the medal, and a ceremony probably will be held before then in Houston, where Dr. DeBakey is chancellor emeritus at Baylor's medical school.
Dr. DeBakey will join an elite list of gold medalists that includes Dr. Jonas Salk, who developed the polio vaccine, George Washington, the Wright Brothers, Winston Churchill, Nelson Mandela and, a year ago, Texas golf legend Byron Nelson.

A coach lambasting the media for its coverage of his team is nothing out of the ordinary, but some say one college coach's recent outburst was out of bounds.
Oklahoma State University coach Mike Gundy's public tirade, aimed at a local sports reporter, stood out as exceptionally angry.
At a press conference following the team's 49-45 win over Texas Tech, Gundy lashed out at Oklahoman sports writer Jenni Carlson, at one point screaming to the crowd that the article and the editor who ran it were "garbage."
Carlson's article was critical of 21-year-old quarterback Bobby Reid, and mocked his postgame behavior. "It would've been normal postgame activity but for one thing. His mother was feeding him chicken," she wrote.
Carlson also reported that Reid was pulled from the starting lineup because he lacked the drive. "Does he have the fire in his belly? Or does he want to be coddled, babied, perhaps even fed chicken?" Carlson wrote.
Don't Pick on Kids, Coach Says
Gundy said that it wasn't true that Reid was scratched as a starter, and defended the player as someone who does the right thing.
"Three-fourths of this is inaccurate,'' Gundy yelled, holding up Carlson's column. "It's fiction. And this article embarrasses me to be involved in athletics."
Gundy, 40, said it was unfair to pick on Reid, who is just a "kid," and said, "This article had to have been written by a person that doesn't have a child."
Other sports reporters have pointed out that Reid, as a Division I athlete, should be prepared to face public scrutiny. Carlson said she was just doing her job.
"I firmly believe that my reporting is solid, my sources are solid, my observations are solid, so I stand firmly on the facts of the column," she said.
She did, however, admit to being taken aback by Gundy's highly personal rant.
"It was unbelievable that this was happening," Carlson said. "I just was really not suspecting that there was gonna be this sort of outrage."
Other sports writers and coaches have taken both sides of the issue, but the majority of letters and e-mails sent to the newspaper's offices support Gundy.
Gundy declined to speak to "Good Morning America."
