The decision was made after Appalachian State defeated Michigan, one of of the most surprising upsets in college football history, and the poll voters decided that a I-AA can be eligible as long as they have played a I-A opponent. The Associated Press announced that lower division schools are now eligible for the AP Top 25 college football poll.
